Jen stood outside in the cold. The sky was overcast, and the wind was strong. She was in a line that reached down the block. There was a tall girl in front of her, a pretty, smiling blonde. It was rare to find blondes in the town, Jen couldn't help thinking. The girl was chatting excitedly with some of her friends in front of her. Yeah, right. , Jen thought, Let me guess, this girl honestly thinks she is going to get assigned the man she chooses? Please! . Jen hadn't been in a good mood all week.
She kept thinking about how once she got married, she would never get to be with Azriel as much again. They had decided to meet at least once a week at the library, and had been moving books there the past few weeks, since Jen wouldn't have access to it after they moved her and her "husband" to a home. But they would still have to be extremely careful, because an adult, especially a woman, could not be seen outside. They had to be either at their jobs or cleaning the house.
The girl in front of her ket going on and on and on. She had one of those annoying, high pitched voices that annoyed everyone. She was sure that she and her boyfriend would get assigned each other, and they would live happily ever after. That little voice in Jen's head kept telling her, This girl is an idiot! She'll never get assigned him! No one ever gets what they want. There are no happily ever afters here. Tell her! Scream it at her face! . It took all the control Jen had to resist that urge.
After a few more minutes of waiting and moving closer to the Hall (where the Council of Elders lived ). She could see the Building, ehich was right next to it. It still gave her the creeps. She couldn't stand the place.
When she walked into the desolate, dark Hall, she took a number, and waited. When her number was called, she walked into one of the booths lined up against the wall, and picked out the proper form. She put down the necessary information, and turned it in to an old secretary at one of the desks.
Jen took a seat, and, sadly, the only one left was next to Annoying Blonde and her friends.
After what had to be an hour, the secretary walked over to the seating area, and called out, " Jen is called to the Council of Elders."
